Located in the Summit Chase Subdivision in the Las Alturas area is a palatial resident like none other. The approximately 6,360-square foot home encompasses 2 acres and sits atop a hill that features views of the Organ Mountains and the city.
Built in 1999 by Kathy and Denny Rogers, owner of The Rogers Group and developer of the subdivision, the couple knew they had chosen the perfect lot to construct their family abode.
“The view is 360 degrees. That in itself is unique,” Kathy Rogers said, adding that their hilltop lot was a dream come true. “We knew this was where we wanted to be … my favorite feature is that anywhere in the home, you can look out a window and see the beautiful vistas. It’s beautiful all year round.”
Taking two years to design and almost a year to build, the Rogers said they were very hands-on with the construction of their seventh home.
“Anytime you build a home, it can be a challenge,” Kathy Rogers said. “We wanted to move fast, but with patience and diligence, you can end up with agreat house.”
Creating a style of their own, the Rogers incorporated various elements from homes they had seen around the country while leaving no detail overlooked.
“We picked up ideas through our travels, that’s how the house evolved,” Denny Rogers said.
Combining informal with formal living areas, the Rogers wanted to create a home that was welcoming to all.
“Every room in the home fills a special need,” Kathy Rogerssaid. “Everyone has someplace to go … I don’t think there is one part of the home we haven’t utilized.”
“We just wanted a warm, inviting house for our family,” Denny Rogers said.
Upon entering the home, guests will notice the couple’s attention to detail from the Brazilian slate flooring to the hand carved pine vigas and corbels.
“The quality of the home’s details, from the design to the building to the décor, it’s all unique,” Kathy Rogers said.
“Most (guests) say they have to come back for a second look,” Denny Rogers said. “There is so much to take in, they say they see something different every time.”
Taking advantage of local products and artisans, the home consists of tumbled marble from a quarry in Belen, N.M., and custom, hand carved cabinetry. The Rogers also had a mirror in one of the half bathrooms custom made from a rug they purchased in Santa Fe.
“It has great color,” Kathy Rogers said of the one-of-a-kind element.
Near the home’s entrance are the living and dining area, which lead into the kitchen. The kitchen features its own seating area, fireplace, view of the Organ Mountains and a large, granite island, great for cooking.
“You can’t beat the kitchen,” Kathy Rogers said. “I like the open space. It’s great for cooking as well as entertaining.”
The custom cabinets were hand stained, using a three-step process to achieve the perfect shade.
Past the oven encased in travertine tile, is a wet bar that leads to the informal living room. This room includes one of four indoor fireplaces, surround sound, double doors to the outside and multiple skylights, an element seen throughout the home for natural light.
As with the cabinets, the Rogers used a three-step, hand painted process on the walls to obtain a suede texture.
Beyond the informal living room, are three bedrooms, the garage and an extra room thatcan be used as a guest or media room. Double doors close off what the Rogers call “the boys’ area,” giving sons Dennis and Bobby extra privacy.
While the boys share a Jack and Jill bathroom, the third bedroom in the area has its own bathroom and entrance.
One of the home’s most used areas is the 2,700-square foot garage, large enough to house a RV. The garage also features a loft, perfect for a game room or hobby area.
Although their two sons were in elementary school when the home was being built, the Rogers said they were thinking ahead when they designed the split floor plan, placing their rooms away from the master suite.
Located on the other side of the home, next to Denny Rogers’ office, is the master suite. Windows looking out to the city surround the bedroom, making it the perfect area to relax and enjoy a book.
The master suite includes alarge walk-in closet, an office and bathroom, which is home to one of Kathy Rogers’ favorite amenities – a jetted bathtub with a view of the city. The bathroom also features two tumbled marble vanities and a shower that is also a steam room.
The Rogers’ attention to detail didn’t stop inside the home. The backyard features a wrap around patio, complete with an outdoor kitchen and separate entertainment bar, as well as a fireplace and a pool with a diving board and spa.
Grass and xeriscaping surround the home and features various native plants, including yuccas and purple sage.
While the Rogers have made a home in their palatial estate, they said they are ready for a house that fits the next phase of their lives and look forward to passing on the peaceful and inviting dwelling.
“We would hope everyone would want to live here,” Kathy Rogers said. “It can suit everyone.”
Brazilian tile and pine vigas and corbels from northern New Mexico are used decoratively throughout the home.
