Monique Hilverding (inset) and her children, including her son seen here reaching for some fruit, pick apples in Las Cruces. Volunteers came out in big numbers over the Labor Day weekend to help Las Cruces’ own U-Pick Mesilla Valley Apples orchard with Burke Farms catch up after experiencing hail damage. Orchard owner LuAnn Burke, who has been on crutches for several weeks, requested help to pick the ripe apples off the trees and also to pick up apples that had fallen on the ground, which prevents proper mowing. Located at 2330 Shalem Colony Trail, the five-acre orchard grows Red Delicious apples as well as Jonathan apples. The orchard also has a few Golden Delicious trees. The apples sell for 50 cents per pound and the orchard has a variety of bucket sizes to choose from. Visitors should bring containers or bags to transport their apples home. The orchard also sells pre-picked apples. The orchard is open 8 a.m. to sundown daily. The office number is 575-526-6165.
