National Education Association-Las Cruces members held a rally in front of the Las Cruces Public Schools administration building Tuesday, Feb. 16 in support of the LCPS board of education. The board received a letter Jan. 26 from New Mexico Public Education Department Secretary Hanna Skandera that was critical of the board because of complaints. The teachers’ union, though, wanted to support the board. “For the first time in years, we have an actively supportive school board taking common sense positions in support of students, employees, and fiscal responsibility,” said NEA-Las Cruces President Patrick Sanchez. “We need to continue to support our locally elected board as they stand up to political appointees in Santa Fe. Local control has never been more important than it is today.” The board voted to not extend Superintendent Stan Rounds’ contract. See Page A3.
