Local youth from the 10X Youth Shooting Club participated in the Central Region Youth Hunter Education Challenge (YHEC) July 25 - 29 in Bentonville, Arkansas. Participants compete in eight (8) events directly related to hunting and hunter safety skills and knowledge..
The Las Cruces youth teams Represented New Mexico while competing against over 110 participants from five (5) states. Both the junior and senior teams were recognized for their performance in multiple events.
The 10X Junior team placed Second in the Central Region overall. They won the .22 rifle and archery competition. They also placed third in shotgun and wildlife ID.
The 10X Senior team placed first in wildlife ID, second in the responsibility exam and third in archery.
Individual awards went to Senior Colton Hash and Junior Ty McCarson who both placed third individually in the archery event in their respective divisions.
YHEC is a comprehensive advanced hunter education competition for youth 18 and under comprised of the following events:
Orienteering- youth receive a set of coordinates and must find their way utilizing only a compass as well as show proficiency reading and understanding maps through a written test..
Responsibility Exam : A written test that encompasses a vast variety of topics that deal with all things related to hunting, conservation, ethics and wildlife management..
Hunter Safety Trail: youth are tested on their safety skills and knowledge of game laws through live action hunting scenarios.
Wildlife Identification: youth must identify animals utilizing tracks, wings, antlers, pelts and skulls
22 rifle:youth are judged on accuracy by shooting at 30 targets of differing sizes with a 22 rifle from multiple positions at varying distances.
Archery: youth are scored based on their accuracy while shooting at 3 dimensional targets at varying distances intended to simulate hunting situations.
Shotgun: ability to hit clay targets being thrown from a variety of directions and locations.
Muzzleloader: accuracy utilizing a muzzleloader rifle on targets of varying size from different distances and positions.
