ACTion Programs for Animals receives grant

Posted

That’s why ACTion Programs for Animals (APA) has received a grant from PEDIGREE Foundation to support APA’s P.A.W.S. (Prisoners and Animals Working Toward Success) program, the nonprofit animal welfare organization based in Las Cruces said in a news release.

As part of P.A.W.S., inmates at the Southern New Mexico Correctional Facility train shelter dogs in basic obedience and potty training to ready them for their forever homes, the news release said. APA has sent hundreds of dogs to this program for rehabilitation and training. Animal adopters often specifically request dogs that are graduates of this program. APA is able to save many more dogs from the shelter, especially larger ones, because of this successful program.

The $15,000 PEDIGREE Foundation grant will help leverage APA’s ability to pull even more dogs from the shelter and enroll them in the P.A.W.S. program, APA said.

“The P.A.W.S. program is a win-win, as it benefits the prisoners, while resulting in well-trained dogs,” said APA Executive Director Michel Meunier. “APA is appreciative of PEDIGREE Foundation’s generous grant that will ensure future success of this program.”

To meet APA’s adoptable animals, visit the adoption center at 537 N. Solano Drive 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday or Saturday, or call 575-571-4654 to schedule an appointment. Adoptable animals may also be viewed at apalascruces.org.

Since May 2012, APA has rescued more than 5,500 animals.

PEDIGREE Foundation is a nonprofit working to end pet homelessness. Nearly 3.1 million dogs end up in shelters and rescues every year, and nearly half never find a home, the foundation said. It was established in 2008 by Mars Petcare, maker of PEDIGREE® food for dogs, to help increase dog adoption rates. The foundation has awarded more than 6,100 grants and $11.6 million to U.S. shelters and rescues that help dogs in need.
