Arts Council opens Sonya Fe solo exhibit June 2

Posted

Award-winning Las Cruces artist Sonya Fe will have a solo exhibit at the Doña Ana Arts Council (DAAC), June 2-June 28.

The exhibit, “RAW,” will include more than two dozen pieces, many of which have not been exhibited previously, primarily because of their graphic subject matter, including child abuse, the artist said in an arts council news release.

In the show, Fe said she wants “the viewer to feel, see and understand what I am saying – to not be left behind.”

“Sonya has an encyclopedia of stories, and visualization of these stories seems to come naturally to her,” said DAAC Gallery Manager Penny Peace. “In creating her visual narratives, it’s as if she’s building an infrastructure, piece by piece. And each piece in this building process becomes an integral and visible part of the story she shares with us. And, more importantly, from my point of view, she forces us outside of our comfort zones. So, be prepared to react.”

Fe, who grew up in the William Mead Housing Projects, aka "Dog Town," in East LA, began drawing at a young age on her family’s cement floor, DAAC said. She has exhibited extensively in the United States and internationally and her work is exhibited in museums and private collections. Last year, Fe received the DAAC Newcomer Award, and she published “Barrio Girl goes to Europe.”

Two receptions will be held for the “RAW exhibit”: 5-8 p.m. Friday, June 2, and noon-3 p.m. Saturday, June 10. Both receptions will be held at DAAC, 230 S. Water St.

The gallery’s regular hours are 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday-Friday.
