Banitas: On to the championship!

Posted

Despite a 45-minute delay in the game because of lightning, the New Mexico Banitas, Las Cruces’ women’s tackle football team, defeated the Zydeco Spice from Lafayette, Louisiana, 40-15 Saturday night, July 8, at Cloudcroft High School’s Bear Stadium in Cloudcroft.

The victory advances the Banitas to the Women’s Football Alliance Division III American Conference National Championship July 21 in Canton, Ohio. They will play the Palm Beach Coyotes.

The Banitas defeated the Rocky Mountain ThunderKatz 22-0 June 24 in Cloudcroft to reach the conference championship game against the Spice. The Banitas are the first women’s tackle football team from New Mexico to play in the WFA national championship.

The Banitas played this season in Cloudcroft because the Las Cruces Public Schools Field of Dreams, where the Banitas played last season, is under renovation.
