Blitz Sports Grill – Bringing the focus to NMSU Athletics

Posted

Las Cruces is a sports city. From little leagues to high school all the way to collegiate, our city and its athletes are intertwined. Blitz Sports Grill, located on 1300 El Paseo Rd., is a new sports bar in Las Cruces that carries the spirit of Aggie Nation daily.

Walking up the Blitz Sports Grill, the first thing you see is a large window cling for New Mexico State University that says “Aggie Up and Chill.” Entering the sports bar, the space is open and inviting. At the entrance, there is a wall with artificial turf with baseballs and a neon sign reading “Let’s Get Blitzed” making for an ideal photo op.

“We bring a different vibe. Las Cruces has good sports bars, but we wanted to bring an emphasis on sports and NMSU,” said Alexis Quezada, co-owner of Blitz Sports Grill.

Quezada and her parents opened Blitz in December 2022. She is an alumna of NMSU with a degree in business with a minor in marketing. She explained that the employees at Blitz have close ties to NMSU like her sister who is bartender and a current student.

“Everyone here is knowledgeable on sports. They either played a sport or are NMSU students,” she said.

As a sports bar, Blitz has several mounted big screen TVs on their walls. Opposite of the bar, the walls have images of famous athletes like Michael Jordan, Lionel Messi, Ronda Rousey, Stone Cold Steve Austin and Kobe Bryant. Pistol Pete is a familiar face Las Cruces will recognize. The mascot is adorned close to the bar.

Earlier this year, Blitz was announced as an official sponsor of NM State Athletics and the Official Watch Party Headquarters for Aggie away games. Quezada said they have several service subscriptions to stream the Aggies on the road.

She noted that the turnout has been good for the watch parties. Their watch parties have the NMSU commentary team on the speakers to add to the experience for fans. During halftime, there is a DJ playing to keep the lively atmosphere.

With daily specials, fans can enjoy a variety of the menu Blitz has to offer like the Pistol Pete Burger. Topped with an onion ring, the burger has crispy jalapeno chips, tomato, red onion, barbeque sauce and mayo. Biting into this burger is a challenge due to the toppings and large patty. The flavors are well balanced and the fries bring the meal together with their dusting of sweet and smokey seasoning. If you are looking for something tangy, try the Buffalo Chicken Sandwich. Like most of the food at Blitz, the portion of the chicken is massive and eclipses the bun. The chicken was crispy and juicy with a buffalo sauce that had a nice spicy tang to it.

In addition to the sports theme, family is at the heart of the business. “We got to know a lot of the Aggie parents,” Quezada said. “They will call to see if we will have the game on.”

Blitz is active on their social media accounts on Facebook and Instagram and post regularly for their sporting events and streams. As the NM State Baseball season continues on, Blitz will continue to give a spotlight to Aggies and their fans.
