Brothers use love of art, design to start new clothing line

For brothers Justin and Cameron Vigil, the business they recently started combines their love of art and drawing, graphic design, having their own clothing line and being their own bosses.

The two opened Always Red E Apparel about six months ago, designing, manufacturing, marketing and selling their own brand of T-shirts, caps and fabric prints. Their office, design and production studio are in the front room of Cameron’s home on Roberts Drive in Las Cruces, and the pair are already planning to expand their space and product line. They have a company booth and regularly take their wares to tattoo conventions, flea markets and trade shows – but are looking for a larger commercial space that combines a warehouse and storefront.

“We learned everything ourselves,” said Justin, who works another day job and then joins his brother evenings to create designs, print T-shirts and package orders. Cameron has a BFA with a focus in drawing and, like Justin, has had a life-long interest in tattoos and art.

The two developed Always Red E design not only as a brand, but also as “a level of preparedness,” Cameron said, who closed his tattoo studio to pursue the clothing business full-time. The name Always Red E is a play on words that “makes you think,” Cameron said.

All the brothers’ designs are original and hand-drawn. And, because they pack and ship every item they sell, Cameron and Justin can find the smallest flaw before it goes out the door.

Using the Procreate app, Cameron spent six-eight hours a day for an entire week perfecting a yin-yang design that includes an angel and a reaper, working out the details for both the angel’s wings and the reaper’s blade.

“We approach each one as if that’s going to be the breakout piece,” he said. “We do every single shirt ourselves.”

Shirts sell for $20 in person, $25 online, with free shipping.

The brothers’ signature red E patch adorns the sleeve of every T-shirt. “We wouldn’t sell anything we’re not wearing,” Justin said.
