Student doctors at Burrell College of Osteopathic Medicine (BCOM) will provide free CPR training 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, April 1, at BCOM, 3501 Arrowhead Drive, on the New Mexico State University campus.
The training will be conducted by student doctors who are members of the BCOM chapter of the National Two Step CPR organization, said BCOM student doctor and organization member Marina Sasnau.
There is no charge to participate, and pre-registration is not required.
“We are a group of medical students that organize and lead compressions-only CPR training sessions,” Sasnau said. “The organization has a simple focus: to teach hands-only CPR to community members in an effort to improve sudden cardiac arrest survival rates. In five minutes or less and free of charge, we teach participants how to dial 9-1-1 and to begin chest compressions.
“Although this is not a certification course, we hope to leave community members prepared to act in the event of an emergency,” she said. “This is a mission aligned with current American Heart Association bystander recommendations.” (Visit https://cpr.heart.org/en/cpr-courses-and-kits/hands-only-cpr.)
Following a brief hands-on CPR demonstration that will begin the April training, “participants can partake in a hands-on experience,” Sasnau said. “There will also be interactive opportunities to learn more about nutrition and general health.”
The event will also include games about maintaining a healthy lifestyle for children. Refreshments will be provided, Sasnau said.
