Posted

Michael Daniels, a battalion chief with nearly 17 years’ experience with the Las Cruces Fire Department (LCFD), was promoted Jan. 15 to deputy chief of operations, LCFD said in a news release.

"We are proud to see Mike's growth within our department,” said Fire Chief Jason Smith. “He will bring knowledge and a love for the profession as our newest deputy chief. Mike is well-liked and well-respected within our family of firefighters. His experience and leadership skills will pay dividends."

Daniels is a 2006 graduate of LCFD's training academy No. 24. Daniels was a firefighter before being promoted to driver/operator in 2010. He was promoted to lieutenant in 2012 and became battalion chief in 2015. He has been a licensed paramedic for more than a decade.

During his service as a battalion chief, Daniels directed the City of Las Cruces’ emergency sheltering program for thousands of asylum seekers in 2019 and assisted with the city’s COVID-19 pandemic response, LCFD said.

Daniels, a veteran of the U.S. Navy, has a bachelor’s degree in individualized studies with a minor in business administration and community health from New Mexico State University, a master’s of business administration degree from Western New Mexico University and a chief fire officer designation from the nonprofit Center for Public Safety Excellence.

In 2021, Daniels completed the four-year Executive Fire Officer Program through the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the National Fire Academy.

As deputy chief of operations, Daniels will oversee LCFD’s fire response and emergency medical response programs and will manage LCFD's special programs, including aircraft rescue firefighting, HazMat and technical rescue response.
