Historical luminaries spar in new show at LCCT

Posted

American founder and slaveholder Thomas Jefferson and the writers Charles Dickens and Leo Tolstoy are stuck together in a room.

It’s not the beginning of a joke, but of the comedy set to open next weekend downtown at the Las Cruces Community Theatre.

"The Gospel According to Thomas Jefferson, Charles Dickens and Count Leo Tolstoy: Discord,” written by Scott Carter, will be the second-to-last show in LCCT’s current season.

In the 2014 play, according to LCCT, the three historical figures are trapped together in the afterlife trying to figure out why they have been confined together. One thing the three men had in common was that they undertook their own adaptations of Biblical scripture. In the course of the evening, they explore their lives and work and argue about their respective theories about Jesus of Nazareth, the New Testament and more amid insults and quips.

Carter is a humorist best known as a writer and producer working with comedian Bill Maher on the shows “Politically Incorrect” and “Real Time with Bill Maher.”

The production is directed by Gus David Sanchez and the cast includes Christian Nieves, Jason Wyatt and Aaron Setliff.
