The City of Las Cruces Museum of Nature and Science (MONAS) and Sigma Xi present “Science Café – Groundwater-Surface Water Interactions in the Hyporheic Zone,” at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 21, via Zoom.

The speaker will be Liwen Wu, Ph.D.  from the Eco-Environmental Research Laboratory at Westlake University in Hangzhou, Zhejiang, China.

In the talk, Wu “will introduce the principles of groundwater and surface water interactions in riverbeds, followed by an example focusing on the implications of seasonal river-groundwater disconnections for streambed exchange in arid and semi-arid environments such as those found in our region,” the city said in a news release. “Interactions between rivers and their surrounding aquifers vary significantly, which can limit the exchange of water, energy and materials.”

Wu is a postdoctoral researcher in Westlake University’s eco-environmental research lab, the city said. Wu holds a doctorate in geography from the Department of Mathematics and Natural Sciences at Humboldt University of Berlin and a master of science degree in environmental engineering from KTH-Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm, Sweden.
