Vigil for fallen LCPD officer planned for Friday

Posted

A candlelight vigil for fallen Las Cruces officer Jonah Hernandez is set for Friday evening, the city announced Wednesday.

Hernandez became the first LCPD officer to die in the line of duty on Feb. 11, when he was reportedly stabbed while responding to a trespassing complaint. His alleged assailant, Armando Silva, was killed by a witness police say was also attacked.

The vigil will commence at 6 p.m. Friday at Albert Johnson Park, 896 N. Main Street. The city stated in a news release that Hernandez’s family is expected to be present for the vigil.

No seating will be available at the park but parking will be permitted at city hall (including its parking garage), Branigan Memorial Library, and the Third Judicial District Courthouse in addition to parking on downtown streets.

The public is also invited to attend funeral services for Hernandez at 10 a.m., Wednesday, Feb. 21, at Abundant Church, 1000 Valley Crest Drive in El Paso, Texas. From the funeral service, a police procession will lead Hernandez to Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Cemetery, 401 S. Zaragosa Road in El Paso. No details of the route were immediately available.

The city said it was looking into live-streaming the vigil. It also suggested that residents can show support by displaying a blue porchlight every evening through Feb. 21. Flags are flying at half staff through sunset on the 21st, as well, by order of Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham.
