ACTion Programs for Animals awarded $5,000 from Maddie’s Fund

A $5,000 grant was awarded to the nonprofit animal rescue organization ACTion Programs for Animals (APA) of Las Cruces from Maddie's Fund, a national family foundation established to revolutionize the status and well-being of companion animals, APA said in a news release.

The grant will support APA’s continued effort to make Doña Ana County a “No Kill” community and keep pets and people together, APA said.

The grant supports the operations of U.S.-based Black, indigenous and people of color (BIPOC)-led government agencies or nonprofit animal welfare or veterinary medicine organizations. APA's founder and executive director, Michel Meunier, is a person of color, the news release said.

“Thanks to Maddie, this grant will allow us to continue to pull animals from our municipal shelter and work toward finding homes for dogs and cats in our community,” Meunier said. “APA is one of our shelter’s biggest partners in our collective lifesaving efforts."

In addition to offering dog and cat adoptions, APA also offers low-cost vaccination and microchip clinics, as well as a pet food bank.

“Our staff and volunteers work tirelessly with our community, other rescues, and the shelter to help keep animals out of the shelter and in their homes. And we would not be able to offer the services we offer without grants like this one from Maddie's Fund,” Meunier said.

Visit APA’s adoption center at 537 N. Solano Drive, open 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday and by appointment.

Since May 2012, APA has rescued more than 5,500 animals. The majority of these have been dogs and cats/kittens pulled from the municipal shelter, the organization said. APA is able to do this through volunteer work of rescue/foster coordinators, foster families, weekend adoptions and donations.

Maddie's Fund is a family foundation established in 1994 by Dave and Cheryl Duffield and is the fulfillment of a promise to their inspirational dog, Maddie, who was a part of the Duffield family 1987-97 and continues to inspire them today. The foundation has awarded more than $255 million in grants toward increased community lifesaving, pioneering shelter medicine education and establishing foster care as a standard across the U.S.
