Aggie men take 4th at WAC golf championsips

BOULDER CITY, Nev, – The NM State men's golf team wrapped up its 2021-22 season on Sunday afternoon at the WAC Men's Golf Championship. Finishing fourth, the Aggies fall just short of defending their title from 2021 and qualifying for their second straight NCAA Regional.
 
Late into the final round, the Aggies were in a three-way tie for first place. In the closing holes, Abilene Christian, Sam Houston, Grand Canyon, and NM State all were battling for the top spot before Abilene Christian took home the team title.
 
A pair of Aggies – Aidan Thomas and Garrison Smith – both finished the tournament inside the top ten. Smith and Thomas remained consistent throughout the season to pace the Aggies and provide leadership throughout.
 
Round Three

• Over the first 15 holes of the day, Aidan Thomas shot four-under-par to lead the charge for NM State. Thomas finished the day shooting 71 (-1) and finished in fifth place.
• Using just one birdie over his final 18 holes, Garrison Smith played an extremely efficient round on Sunday. Shooting a 73 (+1), Smith finished in seventh place over the three days.
• After not playing on Saturday, Joseph Robson caught fire on the back nine on Sunday. Shooting three-under-par with four birdies, Robson finished the day at 68 (-4) – The best score of the tournament for an NM State golfer.
• Alvaro Morales played the first nine holes as clean as possible. Shooting 33 (-3) before the turn, Morales had finished each of the first nine holes at par or better.
• Smith led all players throughout the tournament with 40 pars.
• NM State finished with the second-best team score on Par 4s, shooting an average of 4.15 – Just 0.02 behind Grand Canyon.
