The New Mexico State University men’s and women's basketball teams were both voted as the favorite to win the Western Athletic Conference in the 2016-17 WAC Preseason Coaches and Media Poll.
NMSU senior Ian Baker was named to the All-WAC First Team. Last year he was selected to the WAC All-Defensive Team and the All-WAC Tournament Team. He averaged 13.8 points, 4.6 rebounds, 3.7 assists and 1.1 steals.
Women’s senior guard Moriah Mack was chosen as a member of the All-WAC First Team. The Texas native earned First Team All-WAC and WAC All-Defensive team honors in 2015-16 after she averaged 11.7 points and 5.4 rebounds to go with her 50 assists, 40 steals, and 46.2 field goal percentage.
The Aggie men received nine, first-place votes, earning 167 points to edge out Grand Canyon for the top spot. The Lopes were picked to finish second with 165 points and eight first-place votes, followed by CSU Bakersfield in third with 147 points and two first-place votes. Seattle U was picked to finish fourth with 108 points and one first-place vote, followed by Utah Valley in fifth with 100 and two first-place votes and UMKC in sixth with 96 points and two first-place votes. UT Rio Grande Valley and Chicago State rounded out the poll in seventh and eighth place, with 56 and 25 points, respectively.
The Aggie women tallied seven of eight possible first-place votes for a total of 49 points. UTRGV came in second with 42 points and the remaining first-place vote as Grand Canyon garnered 34 points for third. CSU Bakersfield tallied 29 points while UMKC (26), Utah Valley (23), Seattle U. (13) and Chicago State (8) rounded out the rest of the league.
