The Holiday spirit was filled with music as the city's Weed and Seed program participants were gifted with a dozen guitars.
An anonymous donor purchased the acoustic guitars, which were delivered to A. Fielder Memorial Safe Haven, 906 N. Tornillo St., just prior to Christmas.
The Weed and Seed program began 20 years ago after several Las Cruces Police Department officers got a federal grant to build it. It is one of a number of city youth programs that provide services, meals and recreational opportunities to more than 400 children across the city, said city Youth Services Administrator Robert Nuñez. The program is now administered by the city Parks and Recreation Department.
The program gives youths a place to gather in a safe environment and engage in educational activities and life skills, in addition to recreational activities.
Because of COVID-19, Weed and Seed is only offering 90-minute tutoring sessions four times a day, with five participants per session. Weed and Seed also serves about 150 dinners 4:30-5: 30 p.m. Monday-Friday.
Weed and Seed, Teen Connections and the other youth services programs are part of the city’s “multi-generational services” to its residents, Nuñez said. The goal for the children served by the city is to “get them involved and engaged,” Nuñez said.
