The Empowerment Congress Doña Ana County (ECDAC) has announced that its DescolonizARTE Youth Art Showcase and Mural Reveal will be held at 6: 30 p.m. Saturday, May 22, outside El Bayo Restaurant, 300 Paloma Blanca Drive, in Chaparral, New Mexico.

DescolonizARTE spring workshops in art and social justice with colonia youth from Chaparral and Anthony, New Mexico, will culminate in the showcase and reveal, as the semester ends.

“The mural ‘Respirar’ was designed by program participants with feedback from Chaparral residents and dissects the idea of breathing during a global pandemic, the environment and justice all within the Chihuahuan Desert,” ECDAC said in a news release.

“DescolonizARTE is dedicated to empowering youth through art and social justice education,” ECDA said.

Martin Esquivel is the youth program coordinator. The lead artist is José P. Montoya. The assistant artist is Gerardo Caldera.

“Partnering with the Empowerment Congress and guiding colonia youth has been a dream come true,” Montoya said. “The youth took an active role in the design of the mural and created their own art as statements on various issues such as human rights, gender equality and cultural appropriation. I hope that the impact of this work is long-lasting in that the youth learn about justice through critical thinking and art. With the murals, I hope to impact rural colonia communities to think about some of the issues presented to them through public art,” he said.

The May 22 art showcase and reveal will include Interviews conducted by the youth that will be on display, Bernice Barrientos said. A few invited guests will speak, the mural will be revealed and attendees will have the opportunity to meet “the artist and teens who helped bring this creation to life,” she said.

ECDA began in 2012 as the Doña Ana Quality of Life Initiative. It became the Empowerment Congress of Doña Ana County in 2013.
