In celebration of International Women's Day, the Doña Ana Arts Council (DAAC) and the Southern New Mexico Women's Suffrage Alliance (SNMWSA) will co-host an event to recognize the accomplishments and persistence of five local women, DAAC said in a news release.
The event will be held 5-7 p.m. Wednesday, March 8, at DAAC, 230 S. Water St. It will include a reception, a story-telling session by the five honorees and a question-and-answer session. El Paso reporter Mónica Ortiz Uribe, who co-hosted the podcast “Forgotten: The Women of Juárez,” about the murders of women in the Mexican border city, will moderate.
There is no charge to attend the event, which is open to the public. Seating is limited, so you must RSVP in advance by sending an email to Penny Peace at gallery@daarts.org.
“DAAC is honored to co-host this event recognizing the power, courage, resilience, and persistence of these five local women,” said DAAC Executive Director Araceli Solis.
“It is our hope this event encourages others in our community to come forward and share their testimonies,” said DAAC Gallery Manager Penny Peace.
DAAC and SNMWSA selected the five participants, DAAC said.
They are Julie Castillo, NMSU student, Soroptimist International; Yashoda Latkar, artist and NMSU student, DAAC; Rabbi Evette Lutman, Temple Beth-El, American Association of University Women; Arlean Murillo, regional crisis specialist, and Claudia Rodriguez, education advocate, both with the Women’s Intercultural Center in Anthony, New Mexico.
“Listening to the stories of a few of the many local women who are making a positive difference can inspire us to also be persistent in sharing our voices to support our communities,” said Eileen Van Wie of SNMWSA.
The March 8 event is part of DAAC’s celebration of Women’s History Month throughout March. Now on view in the DAAC gallery is “Unfinished Business: Women’s Power of Persistence,” featuring the art of 30 women artists.
At 2 p.m. Saturday, March 11, DAAC will co-host a reception for the local women selected by Success Partnership/NMCO as “Desert Heroines – Women Who Tell Our Stories.”
