DOÑA ANA ARTS COUNCIL

Arts Council to offer modified children’s summer programming

Posted

The Doña Ana Arts Council (DAAC) usually offers three summer camps in visual and performing arts for K-12 students each year but is making modifications in this year’s scheduling because of state public health orders regarding student-teacher ratios and social distancing.

“We have regretfully cancelled Missoula Children's Theatre (MCT) and Opera Storytellers Camp,” DAAC Communication Director Kathleen Albers said. “We will still offer a modified version of Career Art Path in July, as well as suggest free online art activities for students and their families.”

Career Art Path

DAAC will offer two one-week sessions of the Career Art Path (CAP) visual art camp presented via Zoom. Las Cruces Public Schools art teacher Hiba Mohammed and LCPS and New Mexico State University educator Christa Fredrickson will be CAP co-directors, Albers said.

“They will present art content integrated with art careers and introduce students to local art professionals working in our community,” she said. “The topics will include but not be limited to outdoor painting, theatre set design, figure drawing, costume design, wearable art, cosplay, performing arts, art history and a review of the current online art show, Dawn of Discovery.”

The two online sessions will be 9:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Monday-Friday, July 6-10 and 13-17. Each session can accommodate up to 40 students. The cost is $40 per session.

Prior to the camp, students will receive art supplies and other materials to be used during the week. A virtual gallery show of the students’ work will be displayed on the DAAC website and social media outlets at the end of each session.

Register for one or both sessions at the DAAC website Kids’ Corner tab or www.daarts.org/sign-up-for-career-art-path. For more information, contact Karen Conley at 575-523-6403 or email manager@daarts.org.

Playdate

MCT is offering a free online program called Playdate. It is an interactive set of daily activities based on a one-week International Tour Program. Students learn lines, build props, sing songs, create costumes and perform with their families.

With simple steps and MCT’s professional guidance, they have video tutorials and all the materials needed, including downloadable music.  MCT asks for a $5-$10 donation. Visit www.mctinc.org/childrens-theatre-in-missoula-2/mcts-playdate/ for more information.

DAAC’s Arts and Cultural Center, 1740 Calle de Mercado, is open 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday-Friday. Call 575-523-6403 or visit www.daarts.org.
