Doña Ana Arts Council (DAAC) Executive Director Greg Smith is calling Saturday, Aug. 14, “A Day for The Arts.”

DAAC will host and/or participate in three arts events that day on the Plaza de Las Cruces on Main Street in Downtown and at the DAAC Arts and Cultural Center, 250 W. Amador Ave. There is no charge to attend any of the events.

Here is the schedule:

  • 9 to 11 a.m. (during the Farmers and Crafts Market of Las Cruces), Plaza de Las Cruces: Arts Lab Desert Peaks will premiere two new dance pieces. Joshua Peugh of Las Cruces and Mike Esperanza of New York are the creators and choreographers of the two pieces, which will be performed by 14 professional and amateur dancers from across the country. Visit www.darkcirclescontemporarydance.com and click on the event logo.
  • Noon to 5 p.m., DAAC Arts and Cultural Center main gallery: DAAC “Second Saturday” exhibition featuring artwork by The Ten O’Clock Club. The show is entitled “Disrupted” and includes works created by 21 artists because of and in spite of the pandemic, Smith said in a DACC news release. The “Tenners” are local artists who regularly meet at 10 a.m. on the 10th day of each month. Visit www.facebook.com/The-Ten-OClock-Artists-366979627099984.

At the same time, DAAC’s Staszewski Gallery will feature artwork by Robert Yee and Michel Wing.

  • 7:30 p.m., DAAC Arts and Cultural Center: The New Mexico Music Festival and Orchestral Academy concert, under the direction of Maestro Simón Gollo, an assistant professor in the New Mexico State University Music Department. The Camerata del Sol Chamber Players will join festival guest artists to perform Haydn’s Quartet Opus 20/2 and “Metamorhosen” by Strauss during the concert. Visit

“It promises to be quite a day,” Smith said. “We continue to emphasize that the arts cover a lot of territory!”
