The Las Cruces Public Schools Board of Education approved a plan to fill the seat representing District 2, vacated last week by now former board member Terrie Dallman.

In a special meeting Monday night, the board voted to begin accepting applications for the seat beginning today. Interested applicants have until 5 p.m. Tuesday, June 22 to submit a letter of interest describing the applicant’s interest in filling the position and why they are a good candidate, a copy of the applicant’s voter registration card, and a completed, notarized Declaration of Interest.

Eligible candidates must be 18 years of age or older, a registered voter and must physically reside in District 2, which includes most of central Las Cruces, stretching west to a portion of Fairacres and south to Pajaro Road. A copy of the district map can be found here.

In addition to legal qualifications, an appointed member of the LCPS Board of Education must commit to attend regular sessions, work sessions and special board meetings when called, attend additional meetings such as executive meetings, briefings and others as needed, attend committee meetings of the board, such as finance and audit, attend professional trainings and other considerations as circumstances warrant.

Qualified candidates will be part of a special meeting of the Board of Education on July 6 at 9 a.m. at Las Cruces High School. The meeting will serve as an opportunity for the board to interview qualified candidates and have a discussion regarding the commitment and responsibilities of the District 2 board member. The board will then vote to appoint a candidate during the special meeting, immediately followed by a swearing-in ceremony.

The appointed board member will fulfill the remainder of Dallman’s term, which expires on Jan. 1, 2022 when the term of office begins for the elected candidate in District 2. Elections will be held for this position on Nov. 2, 2021.

Application packets can be picked up at the security desk inside the Dr. Karen M. Trujillo Administration Complex, 505 S. Main Street, Las Cruces, NM 88001. Complete application packets can be mailed or hand delivered to Sean Barham, Chief of Staff at Las Cruces Public Schools, 505 S. Main Street, Suite 249, Las Cruces, NM 88001. The deadline to submit complete packets is 5 p.m. Tuesday, June 22, 2021.
