Boba Cabaret scares up great villain songs for Halloween

Just in time for Halloween, “Good to Be Bad,” the upcoming show at Boba Cabaret, showcases just how bad the villains of stage and screen can be.

Boba will have eight performances of the production, at 6 p.m. dinner shows and 8:30 p.m. evening shows on Friday-Saturday, Oct. 25-26, and Nov. 1-2 at Boba Cabaret, 1900 S. Espina St., suite 8. Tickets are $25 for the dinner show and $12.50 for the evening show.

The show features a medley of favorite songs by villains like Ursula, to The Phantom of the Opera and even a mad dentist.

The cast includes Veronica Bissell (she will perform the weekend of Oct. 25-26), Della Bustamante (she will perform Nov. 1-2), Elijah Estrada, Alyssa Gose and Mark Klett.

Bissell is a recent graduate of New Mexico State University’s theatre department. Most recently, she played Rowena in Las Cruces Community Theatre’s production of “Biloxi Blues.” Veronica also has worked with Everyman Ensemble Theatre, devising and acting in plays such as “Fallout,” “Disconnected,” and “Ronde & Ronde.” She was Belle in Scaffolding Theatre Company’s “Disney’s Beauty and the Beast” and starred in NMSU’s productions of “The Drowsy Chaperone,” “A Wrinkle in Time” and “West Highland Way.”

Bustamante has been a performer in New Mexico for more than 30 years. She first began singing professionally at age 13 with a western swing band called “The Rounders.” Bustamante has a bachelor of music education degree and a master’s of music from NMSU and performed and taught voice in Nashville for eight years before returning to Las Cruces. She is a member of the Bella Voce de Las Cruces professional choir and teaches music lessons. 

Estrada is a Mayfield High School graduate and a vocal performance student at NMSU, where he is part of multiple choral ensembles. His last stage appearance was in Las Cruces Community Theatre’s production of “Meet Me in St. Louis.”

Gose is a recent graduate of the B.F.A. musical theatre program at Colorado Mesa University. Back in Las Cruces for a bit, she performs at local jazz nights and various downtown events. Gose’s recent stage work includes “Reefer Madness” and an all-female production of “1776.” She plans to move to Seattle and continue pursuing a career in the arts.

Klett is the piano accompanist for Oñate High School Choirs, Centennial High School Choirs, Singing Out Choir and NMSU Women’s Chorale. He is the director of music at Wellspring Church and piano/guitar teacher at The Academy of Music and Dance, as well as working with the NMSU Theatre Department.

The tech assistant for “Good to Be Bad” is NMSU Theatre Department freshman Gus Sanchez, who just started his own Las Cruces theatre company, The Blank Conversation.
