Femme Frontera, a Latiné-led regional film organization, is bringing its filmmaker showcase to The Fountain Theatre in Mesilla for movie premieres at 7 p.m. Sunday, June 4.
“The showcase features films made by women and non-binary filmmakers from border regions around the world, celebrating underrepresented communities,” said Las Cruces filmmaker and actor Ryan Rox, who serves as artist support manager for Femme Frontera.
Founded in 2016 by filmmakers from the U.S.-Mexico border region, Femme Frontera has been recognized for “amplifying marginalized voices,” Rox said. “This year's lineup explores themes of love, loss, family, identity and resilience.”
Films to be shown include "Shipping Them," directed by Rox, “about a non-binary day-dreamer who pines for the girl next door, but finds out the grass isn’t always greener,” Rox said; and "La Bi-vencia," a documentary by Mariana Gongora-Reyes and Analaura Cardenas, “that draws on images from a non-existent border between Santa Elena, Chihuahua and Big Bend National Park in Texas, exploring the reunion of a ghost town next to the Rio Grande that was abandoned after 9/11 and examining the impact of borders on people's lives.”
Both films received funding and mentor support from Femme Frontera, made possible by the Sundance Institute and community support, Rox said.
