Branigan Cultural Center July Zoom programs: immigration, the Pueblo Revolt, Comoros, detention art

Posted

Branigan Cultural Center (BCC) remains closed to the public for scheduled maintenance, but will offer a wide array of online programming in July.

  • “Know Your Rights: Immigration with the American Civil Liberties Union.” 5:30- 7 p.m., Wednesday, July 7; virtual Railroad Museum classroom. Learn about the rights of the immigrant community and how to use them. Watch the full video on Facebook @LCMuseums after the in-person presentation at the Railroad Museum.
  • “History Notes: The Pueblo Revolt with the Pueblo Action Alliance.” 1-2 p.m. Thursday, July 8. In this presentation by the community organization Pueblo Action Alliance, hear about the history of the Pueblo Revolt (Aug. 10-21, 1680) and how those roots still impact pueblo communities today. Tune into the Zoom webinar with the link https://rebrand.ly/PuebloRevolt. Discover history and culture through an informal discussion series on the second Thursday of each month. The theme July through September is “History of Revolutions and Revolts.”
  • “What’s the Word: Arabic – A Trip to Comoros.” 5:30-7:30 p.m., Thursday, July 8.

Learn language through culture! Dive into the history and traditions of Comoros while learning and practicing Arabic language skills. These are not formal classes but provide an opportunity for learning and conversation between beginner and more experienced participants. Register to attend by emailing Kayla Myers at education@las-cruces.org.

  • “Expression and Migration Workshop.” 5:30-7:30 p.m., Wednesday, July 28. This workshop is inspired by the exhibit “Uncaged Art,” which features art created by youth held in immigration detention. Participants learn about youth and migration and then have the opportunity to express themselves through art, as they are provided an activity kit with various art supplies and can create art pieces that express their emotions about the migration experience. The works will then prompt further conversation and learning among the group. Register to attend by emailing education@las-cruces.org. For questions contact Kayla Myers at kmyers@las-cruces.org.

BCC will be closed for construction through September 2021. For up-to-date information on museum reopening, virtual programming and more, visit http://las-cruces.org/museums and follow Las Cruces museums on Facebook and Instagram @LCMuseums.
