Branigan Cultural Center lecture covers the evolution of home economics

Posted

Branigan Cultural Center (BCC) will host Merranda Romero Marin, Ph.D. for "Beyond Cooking, Cleaning and sewing" at noon, Thursday, Feb. 16, at BCC, 501 N. Main St. downtown.

Marin will discuss how the field of home economics has transformed into what is now called family and consumer science (FACS), Las Cruces Museums said in a news release.

“The presentation will highlight female scientists who worked to bring lab sciences into the homes of families by providing education around healthy human development, food safety, nutrition, etc. to enhance and improve the lives of community members,” the news release said.

The presentation will also highlight FACS gains in the United States and especially in New Mexico.

Romero Marín is a professor in and interim department head of the FACS Department at New Mexico State University. She is a licensed psychologist and marriage and family therapist specializing in the treatment of post-traumatic stress disorder. Romero Marin’s areas of research include understanding the impact of poverty on children and family systems, maternal mental well-being and the effects of trauma on family and community systems and resulting resilience mechanisms.

Romero Marin “takes pride in being dedicated to understanding and promoting the strengths of vulnerable and diverse populations,” the news release said.

She also promotes first-generation college students to degree completion.

Romero Marin serves on the New Mexico Board of Psychologist Examiners, is chair pf the American Psychological Association Membership Board and is actively engaged in the Association of State and Provincial Psychology Boards.

BCC is accessible from RoadRUNNER Transit Route 1 Stop 1.
