Branigan Cultural Center BCC) is opening a new exhibition, “Small Village New Mexico,” featuring photographs from New Mexico State University photojournalism students.

The exhibit “presents images of the people, buildings and landscape along the 30-mile stretch of New Mexico State Road 28,” the City of Las Cruces said in a news release.

The exhibition is open Friday, April 14-Saturday, June 24, 2023. A reception and gallery talk will be held 5-6:30 p.m. Friday, May 5, at BCC.

The “Small Village New Mexico” project is an ongoing photo-documentary project of the NMSU Journalism Department, the city said. Under the leadership of photojournalist Bruce Berman, journalism students have documented southern New Mexico’s Rio Grande River Valley for the past 10 years. The images presented in the exhibition “capture both the timeless quality of the small villages between Hatch and Anthony and the changes brought about by the influx of new residents and transitions in land use,” the city said. “As such, they are an important record of the local area in the early 21st century.”

Photojournalism students participating in the exhibit include Talulah Aguilar, Nathaniel Bitting, Willie Cummings, Jewel Dominquez, Juan Echeagaray, Daniel Espinoza, Kaitlin Espiritu, Leslie Gonzales, Hannah Hunter, Colton Montoya, Elijah Reyes, Evelyn Sandoval and Ivan Perea.

BCC, 501 N. Main St. downtown, is open 10 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Tuesday-Friday and 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Saturday. There is no admission charge. BCC is accessible from RoadRUNNER Transit Route 1 Stop 1.
