Thomas Branigan Memorial Library will host a Zoom talk by award-winning author Joshua Wheeler, 12:30-1:20 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 3.
Wheeler, who grew up in Alamogordo, is author of “Acid West,” a collection of essays about southern New Mexico. In the book, “he traverses the New Mexico landscape his family has called home for seven generations,” the City of Las Cruces said in a news release.
“Acid West” is “a rollicking debut book of essays that takes readers on a trip through the muck of American myths that have settled in the desert of our country’s underbelly,” said McMillan Publishers. The essay collection is filled with “vestiges of the Old West that have been transformed, suddenly and irrevocably, by innovation. Wheeler excavates and reexamines these oddities, assembling a cabinet of narrative curiosities: a man who steps from the stratosphere and free-falls to the desert; a treasure hunt for buried Atari video games; a village plagued by the legacy of atomic testing; a lonely desert spaceport; a UFO festival during the paranoid Summer of Snowden.”
In addition to discussing his book during the Branigan Zoom event, Wheeler will speak about his research, writing style and literary influences.
“Acid West” is available at Branigan Library and major bookstores, including COAS in Las Cruces.
Wheeler teaches creative writing at Louisiana State University.
