U.S. Secretary of Commerce Gina M. Raimondo announced that the Department’s Economic Development Administration (EDA) is awarding a $1.5 million CARES Act Recovery Assistance grant to the City of Anthony, New Mexico to support construction of an urgent care medical facility there.

“I am grateful for all the help that Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham and U.S. Sens. Ben Ray Lujan and Martin Heinrich, both D-N.M., gave in helping secure this critical funding,” said New Mexico state Rep. Doreen Y. Gallegos, D-Doña Ana, of Las Cruces. “Our rural communities deserve a vibrant reliable health care system that all other urban communities enjoy. This grant is just the first step in building a robust health care infrastructure for this area,” Gallegos said.

Gallegos represents New Mexico House District 52, which includes that includes the City of Anthony.

Construction of the approximately 3,100-square-foot urgent care medical facility will be on the former Dos Lagos golf course, property purchased by the City of Anthony, Gallegos said. The Dos Lagos property will ultimately house a multi-generational campus that will offer diversified long-term employment opportunities as well as facilities to connect jobs with its citizens. This EDA grant, to be matched with $375,000 in local funds, is expected to create 35 jobs, Gallegos said.

“I am proud to work with the mayor and all the trustees to help secure legislative capital outlay funding for the Dos Lagos project,” said Gallegos, who is majority whip in the New Mexico House of Representatives. “Having a campus that will be an economic driver for the City of Anthony and the surrounding communities will be a game changer for this area. If we want our children to stay and help build this community, it’s important that there be economic and recreational opportunities for them.”

“We are building a future for our children and their children for Anthony, Berino, Vado and all of southern Doña Ana County,” Gallegos said.
