Cattle Growers group launch essay contest across all NM counties

The New Mexico Cattle Growers’ Association (NMCGA) has created the “NMCGA Heritage Buckle” essay contest in all 33 counties of New Mexico.

Children and young adults ages 9 to 21 are eligible for the contest, which requires a 200- to 500-word essay on the topic of “value that you place on the heritage of the cattle industry and ranching in New Mexico.”

Essay submission deadlines will be dependent on the county fair date in each county, NMCGA said in a news release.
(The Doña Ana County Fair is July 30-Aug. 4. Visit www.donaanacountyfair.com/.)

NMCGA board members, county fair board members and the Heritage Buckle sponsors will collaborate in deciding the final winners. Each winner will receive a buckle and one-year junior NMCGA membership.

“The development of New Mexico youth is of the upmost importance to the future of agriculture and the beef industry,” NMCGA President Randell Major of Magdalena said. “We are extremely thankful for our sponsors who have also recognized the importance of this.”

“Serving as the voice of the beef industry in New Mexico since 1914, New Mexico Cattle Growers’ Association was established to assist livestock producers in the State of New Mexico,” the association said on its website. NMCGA currently has members in all 33 of New Mexico’s counties as well as some in 19 other states.

NMCGA has more than 1,200 members, including more than 50 members in Doña Ana County. Its statewide board of directors includes John Conniff, a retired pediatric dentist in Las Cruces.
