CAV Gallery’s ‘Celestial Bodies: Between Heaven and Earth’ exhibition has March 4 opening

CAV Gallery of Las Cruces presents “Celestial Bodies: Between Heaven and Earth,” a multimedia group exhibition, opening Friday, March 4, and continuing through Friday, April 1, at CAV Gallery, 128 S. Main St. downtown.

The exhibit’s opening reception is 4-10 p.m. Friday, March 4, at the gallery.

The exhibition “is a response to the modern billionaire Space Race, which is primarily taking place in what is currently the ‘American Southwest,’” said gallery owner and Las Cruces artist and photographer Marcus Xavier Chormicle.

“The exhibition centers different historic and cultural connections to the cosmos, while drawing essential parallels between the space race and the effects of conquest and colonialism,” Chormicle said.

“The work in the show underscores cultural connections to outer space while expanding ideas around our physical forms as celestial bodies. The exhibition investigates the concept of ‘the body’ on four scales: the singular body, a communal body, bodies of land and the cosmic body.

The show features work from Chormicle, along with artists Granville Carroll, Sam Fresquez, Joshua Castaneda, Cory Feder, Estephania Gonzalez, Cassandra Klos, Diego Medina, Nathan Emerson and Roy Wasson Valle.

The Cristian Anthony Vallejo (CAV) Memorial Gallery was founded by Chormicle in 2020. The name honors his late cousin. A digital marketing specialist, Chormicle also founded Chormicle Photography.
