The Mesilla Valley Iris Society celebrated its 50th Anniversary, (1971-2021) by hosting the American Iris Society convention April 11-16, in Las Cruces. The first ever AIS convention held in New Mexico was also the 100th celebration of the AIS (which happened in 2020 but was unable to have the convention until this year).
More than 240 people from across the states and some from Canada descended on Las Cruces to learn more about their iris craft and tour iris farms and gardens throughout the area including the Blue J Iris nursery in Vado, Calhoun Flower Farm in La Mesa and the Farm & Ranch Heritage Museum garden in Las Cruces.
The Blue J Iris nursery has an open house, open to the public from 8 a.m.-2 p.m. on April 23, 40 Palomino Road, Vado. Visitors are welcome on other days as well, but the nursery requests a call so they know you are coming: 915-780-8927. bluejiris.com.
Calhoun Flower Farm is also having an open house from 9-11 a.m. April 22 and 23. The open house is free but tickets are required, visit Calhoun Flower Farm at EventBright to sign up. Their number is 575-526-6661 for more information. calhounflowerfarm.com.
