Chicano artist to speak at city Museum of Art

Posted

The City of Las Cruces Museum of Art (MOA) will host a talk by artist Gaspar Enríquez 1-2 p.m. Saturday, May 6, at MOA, 491 N. Main St.

Enríquez will speak about his experiences as a Chicano artist, the changes he has seen in the field of Chicano art and where he sees Chicano art headed in the future, the city said in a news release.

The presentation is the concluding program for MOA’s retrospective exhibition of his work, “Gaspar Enríquez: Chicano Pride, Chicano Soul.” May 6 is the last day to view the exhibition.

Enríquez is a nationally recognized Chicano artist from El Paso who uses an airbrush to create hyper-realistic portraits, which “show the humanity of the El Paso Chicano community and the tensions they face when living in a two-culture environment,” the city said.

Enríquez was born and raised in the Segundo Barrio of El Paso in 1942. He earned a bachelor of art degree from the University of Texas at El Paso in 1971 and a master of art degree in metals from New Mexico State University in 1985.

Enríquez was an art teacher at Bowie High School in El Paso for 32 years. Since his retirement, he has focused on his artwork and renovating adobe structures in the historic downtown of San Elizario, Texas. His artwork is in the collections of the National Portrait Gallery at the Smithsonian Institution, the Cheech Marin Center for Chicano Art & Culture, the El Paso Museum of Art and other prominent institutions, the city said.

Enríquez has received the 2016 Segundo Barrio Person of the Year award, UTEP’s distinguished alumni award and the Mid-Americarts Alliance Fellowship in 1994.

MOA is open 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Tuesday-Friday and 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Saturday.

The museum is accessible from RoadRUNNER Transit Route 1, Stop 1.
