VETERANS PARK MASTER PLAN

City adopts master plan for Veterans Park

Posted

The Las Cruces City Council voted unanimously to adopt a conceptual master plan for Veterans Memorial Park that will include a new parking lot, more space for memorials and monuments and additional landscaping and other features. The vote came at the council’s Monday, Nov. 18, regular meeting.

Councilor Kasandra Gandara did not attend the meeting.

The plan also includes an entry pavilion, more trees, a contemplation/decompression garden and relocating the park’s playground, said city landscape architect Cathy Mathews. The city acquired the additional property at 1251 N. Roadrunner Parkway through a land trade.

The plan is “a great way to think about how we upgrade other parks in the city moving forward,” City Councilor Gabe Vasquez said. The city “could use the same attention, same confluence of neighbors and interest to rebuild some of our existing parks,” he said.

The council also unanimously approved contract awards to two Las Cruces companies for four projects approved by Las Cruces voters in a general obligation bond in August 2018.

Dekker/Perich/Sabatini was awarded a contract not to exceed $92,500 for programming, basic design services and construction contract administration of the Unidad Park playground rehabilitation and splash pad addition. Highland Enterprises, Inc. was awarded three contracts for design-build services for: 1) $122,900 for design-build services for walking, jogging and biking recreational trail projects; 2) $63,750 for park and sport courts rehabilitation; and 3) almost $158,000 for Hadley Avenue Recreation Complex improvements.
