CITY BENCHES TREES

City has program to donate trees, benches

Posted

During public input at the Nov. 18 Las Cruces City Council meeting, Las Cruces resident Denise Benedict said donating trees is “a beautiful way … to “honor someone, especially.”

City landscape architect Cathy Mathews said the city has a Memorial Tree and Bench Program, which a program brochure said “is a wonderful way … to celebrate, honor or memorialize a special individual, group or event. With the purchase of a new tree or park bench, the city Parks and Recreation Department will work with the donor to assure the planting or installing of a new tree or bench in a park, public space, or along a walking trail,” the brochure continues.

The tree and bench program options:

• Option 1: New tree planting, $250; a new tree, suited to the park selected, will be planted in a park

in memory of or in honor of a loved one. The price includes tree, labor and irrigation costs.

• Option 2: New basic park bench, $1,000; a bench will be placed in a local park or along a walking

trail in honor of a loved one. Price includes bench, labor and installation with a concrete slab.

• Option 3: New Bench with plaque; a custom bench with a name plaque will be placed in a local park or along a walking trail. Price options include all of Option 2, in addition to a personalized plaque that is mounted onto the bench. The full price depends on bench selected.

Memorial Tree and Bench Program brochures can be picked up at the city Parks and Recreation Department administration building, 1501 E. Hadley Ave. Call 575-541-2550. Visit www.las-cruces.org/178/Parks-Recreation.
