LAS CRUCES - The City of Las Cruces Museum System (LCMS) has been awarded a $50,000 grant from the Henry Luce Foundation American Art Program to digitize the city’s permanent collection of southern New Mexico art.

“We are very excited,” said Museum Manager (Collections) Sarah Thomson.

“The Henry Luce Foundation supports museums in advancing American visual arts through research, exhibitions and collections projects,” the city said in a news release. “Artworks in LCMS permanent collection, including paintings, drawings, sculptures, photographs and more, will be photographed and researched” thanks to the grant, the city said.

The project will increase the accessibility of the permanent art collection, as the digital images and updated information about each piece of art will be made available to the public online, the news release said. Additionally, a selection of three-dimensional objects will be mapped and reproduced using three-dimensional printing technology. These reproductions can be handled by visitors seeking a hands-on experience of museum collections.

The project will also support students and recent graduates in the fields of museum studies, art history, public history and more. Funding from this grant will be used to hire four contract employees to complete the work.

Las Cruces museums are located at 411 N. Main St. downtown and are open 10 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Tuesday-Friday, with extended summer hours (continuing through the month of June) until 8 p.m. on Wednesday and 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m. on Saturday.
