City wants historic location pics; May is Historic Preservation Month

Sam Bean Jr. house Sam Bean Jr. house on West Griggs Avenue was built circa 1890 of adobe bricks in the Territorial Style. Bean’s father was among the settlers who staked out property in the original town site that U.S. Army Lt. Delos Bennett Sackett surveyed in 1849. Sam Bean also had two notable uncles: Joshua, who served as the first mayor of San Diego, and Roy, the legendary “Law West of the Pecos” of Langtry, Texas.

Bungalow Bungalow on South Miranda Street is constructed of adobe and plastered with stucco, its front-facing gables and wooden brackets incorporate design elements common to the bungalows designed by Greene & Greene Architects of Pasadena, California. This residence connects southern New Mexico to the West Coast of the early 20th century.

Fall (1861-1944) on South Miranda Street in Las Cruces. Fall was one of New Mexico’s first two U.S. senators after statehood in 1912. He was also secretary of the U.S. Department of the Interior and a key player in the Teapot Dome scandal during the administration of President Warren G. Harding.

The City of Las Cruces wants photos of your favorite historic locations in the city.

In a news release, City Preservation Specialist Troy Ainsworth invited people to submit photos of these locations on the city’s Facebook page: @CityofLasCruces. Visit the city’s historic preservation website (www.las-cruces.org/1738/Preserving-Our-History) for more information.

May is national Historic Preservation Month, “whereby towns and cities nationwide promote their uniqueness and the richness of their respective heritage,” the city said in a May 18 news release.

“For Las Cruces, Historic Preservation Month 2020 offers a distinctive moment to acknowledge a rich past and a bright future, particularly for the steps it has taken over the past year to promote its history and buildings,” the news release said.

In 2019, the city created a staff position for a preservation planner, adopted a historic preservation ordinance and has appointed seven residents to serve on the city’s Historic Preservation Commission. In recent years, community-driven organizations such as Las Esperanzas, the Amador Hotel Foundation and the Doña Ana County Historical Society have promoted the community’s history that includes the historical architectural structures.”

Preservation Month began as National Preservation Week, May 6-12, 1973. The National Trust for Historic Places (NTHP) expanded it to the entire month of May in 2005. Visit www.savingplaces.org/.
