Community Foundation awards second round from wellness grant

The Community Foundation of Southern New Mexico (CFSNM) Wellness Fund has awarded a second round of funding to assist southern New Mexico nonprofits deal with the pandemic, CFSNM said in a news release.

The Wellness Fund was established in 2016 by individual donors and supports nonprofits that focus on education, direct services, prevention and wellness, programmatic support and social determinants of health.

In 2020, the Wellness Fund was able to award $98,500 in its first round of helping nonprofits, which included AppleTree Educational Center, Big Brothers Big Sisters Mountain Region, Border Youth Baseball, Mesilla Valley CASA (Court-Appointed Special Advocates), NMSU Foundation in partnership with Jardin de los Ninos, PlaySharity, Deming Silver Linings, Dyslexia Institute of Southern New Mexico, New Mexico Wildlife Federation, Roadrunner Food Bank, Con Alma Health Foundation and Casa de Peregrinos emergency food bank of Doña Ana County.

The second cycle awarded an additional $41,000, which assisted 11 nonprofits, including the Boys and Girls Club of Las Cruces (BGCLC). The club serves children 6-18 with a safe place to grow by providing programs to help develop character, education and overall health and wellness, the news release said.

“We are extremely grateful for the CFSNM’s continued partnership and support through the wellness fund,” BGCLC CEO Ashley Echavarria said. “These funds will help us purchase a BEAM interactive projector, which will allow our club members the opportunity to enjoy tons of games that promote brain development and physical activity, while allowing them to maintain social distance and touch-free activity. At our club, we do everything to ensure that our members are having fun while staying safe, and these funds are going to enhance that for us. We appreciate this support and all that CFSNM continues to do for us and our community.”

The Wellness Fund will be opened again in March 2021, awarding grants of $5,000-$15,000 to organizations located and providing services in Doña Ana, Hidalgo, Otero, Sierra, Grant, Lincoln and Luna counties.
