LETTER TO THE EDITOR

Community thanks

Posted

To the editor:

As we begin to get back to “normal” life again, I have been reaching out to individuals and organizations that have gone above and beyond to support our local healthcare heroes. Many of them deserve additional thanks publicly as they have done some truly extraordinary things.

Virgin Galactic quickly researched and funded testing devices so we can more rapidly diagnose patients locally. This allowed us to better protect our staff and patients. They also provided PPE and fed our staff on numerous occasions, as did many local restaurants and businesses. We are grateful.

Individuals and sewing groups made cloth masks and gowns to help protect our staff and patients.

Our elected officials have gone above and beyond to do what’s best for our community. They’ve listened to input to make difficult recommendations and decisions to protect our families. And the level of COVID-19 in our area has remained very low compared to other areas.

Sen. John Arthur Smith has been a strong voice for fiscal responsibility in New Mexico’s budgeting, but he has been sensitive to infrastructure, social and healthcare needs in southern New Mexico. Sen. Mary Kay Papen has been a tireless supporter of behavioral-health services, helping New Mexicans in need and mental health providers. She has advocated for accountability of managed-care organizations to make sure that the right services are directed to patients and that providers are paid in a timely manner within a fair regulatory environment.

Most importantly, I want to thank law enforcement and first responders who join us on the frontlines of this pandemic each day.

We’re all ready to get back to business. We are in the business of taking care of those in the community who need healthcare. We at MMC take great pride in the safe, high-quality we provide. Our focus was on safety and quality before COVID-19. Our focus remains.
