What is COVID-19?  (World Health Organization)

Coronaviruses cause respiratory infections from the common cold to Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) and Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS). The newest coronavirus causes COVID-19 (coronavirus disease 2019), unknown until cases were reported in Wuhan, China in December 2019. The most common symptoms are fever, dry cough and tiredness; less common are aches and pains, nasal congestion, headache, sore throat, conjunctivitis, diarrhea, loss of taste or smell or a skin rash or discoloration of fingers or toes. Symptoms are usually mild and begin gradually. About 80 percent recover without hospitalization; about 20 percent become seriously ill and develop difficulty breathing. Older people and those with underlying medical problems like high blood pressure, heart and lung problems, diabetes or cancer are at higher risk of serious illness.
