COVID-19 update: New Mexico is ‘on hold’
“We’re on hold,” New Mexico Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham said at a Thursday, June 25, news conference during which she was sharply critical of the state’s current response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
“New Mexicans have gotten really lax about wearing masks,” the governor said. The state, she said, will “not move forward until we’re clear that the virus hasn’t gone anywhere.”
While most New Mexico businesses are adhering to COVID-safe practices, she said, many residents of the state are not wearing masks or practicing safe social distancing and are gathering in groups of more than five people.
That means the current public health order in effect statewide since June 1 will likely continue into July, she said. It’s possible that she will make an announcement within the next few days about additional openings for business and raising limits on mass gatherings, Lujan Grisham said, but that will depend on how New Mexicans behave.
“We can do better than this,” the governor said, as she urged New Mexicans to follow public health guidelines, to get tested for COVID-19 and to apply gentle peer pressure to others to follow all public health rules.
