City Economic Recovery board names has first meeting, names chair
The City of Las Cruces Economic Recovery Ad Hoc Board held its first meeting June 8. Members choose Salud! de Mesilla co-owner Christopher Schaljo as chair. The city council created the board May 22 to develop strategies to reopen the city economy impacted by COVID-19. Committee members also include Doug Cowan of Cornerstone Baptist Church/Cornerstone Christian Academy; Michael Harris, owner of a Las Cruces technology consulting company; Jolene Martinez, clinical director of Families and Youth, Inc.; former city councilor Sharon Thomas, who is a member of the South Central Regional Transit Authority board; Debbi Moore, president and CEO of the Greater Las Cruces Chamber of Commerce; and city Economic Development Department Director Griselda Martinez and Deputy Director Francisco Pallares.
Board members decided to meet weekly via Zoom, with meetings to begin at 10 a.m. Thursdays. They also discussed creating a campaign “to help build the public’s confidence in getting back into a new normal,’” to quote Cowan. People will continue to engage more with local business, he said, “if we can begin to mitigate the fear and show them our successes.”
The board’s second meeting will be 10 a.m. Thursday, June 18, at youtube.com/clctv20. At that meeting, the board is expected to appoint additional members to bring it to 14. The board, which will dissolve when the city’s economy is fully open, will work in alignment with the New Mexico Economic Recovery Council appointed by Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham in April.
