Cruces soccer team takes tournament in California

Posted

The LC Timbers 01 boys’ soccer team of Las Cruces won the LA Galaxy sponsored November Nights tournament in San Diego, California over the Thanksgiving weekend.

The team also won the LA College Showcase in June, making them double champions and undefeated in two appearances in college showcase tournaments in California over the past six months.

The November Nights championship included a 2-1 victory over the Blues Football Club from San Francisco, ranked 32nd in the nation and one of several national Top 100 teams the LC Timbers have beaten over the past year.

The Timbers are made up of the top players from eight New Mexico high schools (see roster). The team currently has 25 players, 14 of whom traveled to San Diego for the tournament.

In addition to representing southern New Mexico at national level tournaments, the LC Timbers strive to get players seen by college scouts. The team travels to national level college scouted “showcase” tournaments frequently. Since Las Cruces does not have the facilities to hold these types of tournaments here, this team has traveled to play in Santa Barbara, Los Angeles, San Diego, Las Vegas, Phoenix, Tucson and Denver over the past year. Although it costs a great deal of money, this has paid off with many players being recruited by college programs, including half a dozen college programs that asked about players in San Diego.

Several players are also being recruited by the new NMSU-UDA soccer program set to begin playing next fall. In addition, many players also participated in the recent tryout for FC Grande, a semi-professional soccer team in Las Cruces, which is the only professional sports team currently in Las Cruces. Several of the LC Timbers 01 boys’ players have been invited to play with FC Grande in their upcoming UPSL season.

According a news release, local sponsors helping to offset travel costs associated with the national level tournaments are Pic Quik, Andele restaurant, Ol’ Gringo salsa, Kane Law Firm, Kona Ice, Advanced Automotive, Transmission Warehouse and House of Grafix.
