Seven Doña Ana Community College students brought home medals from the SkillsUSA New Mexico competition, and two will participate in the national competition, DACC said in a news release. Another student won an NMSU cake-making contest.
The skills event, held April 8-9 at Central New Mexico Community College in Albuquerque, is an annual career and technical education competition, DACC said, as college and high-school students compete at local and state levels in more than 110 categories. Gold medalists from the state level are invited to the national competition, which will be held June 20-24 in Atlanta.
Competition categories range from job interviews, prepared speech and customer service to advertising, auto service, culinary arts and medical.
Six DACC students majoring in computer information technology and one majoring in building construction technology placed in four categories:
DACC faculty advisers who assisted the students were John Carter, Leilani Benoit, Tim Chappell, Ph.D., and Kevin Gall.
Taking the cake
DACC Culinary Arts Program (CAP) student Eva Perez took first place in her division, most appetizing, for her entry, Crime & Punishment, in the second annual Edible Storybook Contest held April 9 at New Mexico State University.
CAP chefs Cecilia Castro and Jen Hart both won first place in two divisions, most visually appealing and people’s choice, for their Alice in Wonderland cake.
The Edible Storybook Contest coincides with international Edible Book Day, DACC said. It is a time for book and food lovers to join with book artists and appreciate their love for reading and eating. Typically, edible books are created, displayed and voted on before being eaten.
