Deadline looms for NMSU theater camp; ask about financial help

Posted

Sunday, May 15, is the registration deadline for the New Mexico State University Theatre Academy Camp.

The camp will be held June 12-17 at NMSU in Las Cruces. It can accommodate up to 50 students, ages 13-18 (grades seven-12).

Tuition, which includes room and board, is $450. Because of a donation to the summer camp program, a limited number of scholarships are available based on financial need that will reduce the cost to $125.

“The NMSU Theatre Academy Camp brings together teens from all over the region for an overnight, on-campus experience featuring an introduction to the skills needed to create a successful stage production: voice, improvisation, dance, scene study, character development and other acting techniques,” said NMSU Theatre Department Head Wil Kilroy, who is the camp director. “Students engage in performance exercises that will not only enhance acting talent, but also assist in developing imagination, confidence, self-awareness, teamwork, collaboration and communication skills.  Counselors are advanced NMSU Theatre students or alums, with workshops also taught by current faculty, and campers work in smaller groups to create and present original works of theater at the end of the week.”   All Covid safety precautions as required will be in place, Kilroy said.

Registration/dorm check-in will begin at 4 p.m. Sunday, June 12, with orientation in the dorm lobby at 4:45 p.m., followed by dinner. That evening, groups of eight to 10 participating students will meet with directors for auditions and the start of creating a work-in-progress for presentation at 5:30 p.m. on Friday, June 17, the final day of the camp.

During the camp, students will be housed in an NMSU dormitory, Kilroy said. There will be one live-in counselor/teacher for each 10 to 12 students. Nightly bed-checks will be done to ensure all attendees are safe and sound in their rooms.

Each day of the camp will begin with a full breakfast in the NMSU Taos Dining Hall followed by an all-group physical/vocal preparation class. Groups will then divide in sections to work on a variety of performance skills, with breaks for lunch and dinner. Evenings will be devoted to rehearsals.

Additional fun events will be interspersed throughout the week so that students can fully enjoy all that the NMSU campus has to offer, which may include museum and/or library tours as well as outdoor activities.
