Double-dealing

Posted

Is America’s model of double-dealing in politics, great or what. Billions of dollars are spent by corporate and wealthy private donors to elect or reelect politicians while a concerned public takes time consuming actions, ask for contributions, demonstrations and Congress spending millions of tax dollars trying to impeach them for obvious reasons. Where else does nation have a president and a Senate who spend their time devising devious means to stop people from voting.

There was a saying that in America, candidates run for offices and then get elected, while in Latin America they get regime changes. At least, and like most European countries, Latin America encourages people to vote regardless of foreign interventions and the regime changes that follows. So where does the Trump Administration, his personal DOJ, the Senate and the SCOTUS fit in the equation? Worse yet, why do they try to keep people from voting? Isn’t it bad enough that almost half of the registered voters in the country do not even bother to vote in the primary elections, much less in the General one?

The old saying in Latin America during the elections is called “el Voto o La Bota!” (the Vote or the Boot). To put it bluntly, doesn’t the high percentage of American nonvoters realize they are not the only ones getting the boot, but so is our democracy and everything that comes with it?

Are we becoming a banana republic when it comes to voting?
