El Caldito dishes out thanks for 2019 Empty Bowls

El Caldito Soup Kitchen Office Manager Diane D’Ambrosio had a long list of thank-yous after the 27th annual Empty Bowls event held Friday, Oct. 18, at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church.

“This event is our largest fundraiser of the year,” D’Ambrosio said. “The money raised goes towards the cost associated with keeping the soup kitchen running daily; the utility bill alone is over $19,000 annually. Therefore, our fundraisers are so important. the money helps support our goal of feeding those that are hungry in our community. 

“It really was amazing to see the hundreds of folks in our community line up outside the event showing their support,” D’Ambrosio said about this year’s Empty Bowls. “The line was there almost the entire event; it was a wonderful site.”

The goal for the 2019 event was $30,000, she said. The 2018 Empty Bowls raised about $25,000 for El Caldito.

D’Ambrosio offered thanks to the follow groups and organizations that helped with this year’s event: Potters’ Guild of Las Cruces (which made approximately 1,100 bowls for the 2019 event); St. Paul’s Methodist Church that again hosted the event; the 45 restaurants that donated soup to the event;

the media that advertised the event; the 19 businesses that sold tickets; local banks and businesses that donated money, gift cards and water; Casa de Perigrinos emergency food for donating water; the

When it was founded 35 years ago, El Caldito offered a mid-day meal one day a week, according to the soup kitchen’s website. The kitchen was relocated to its present facility on the Mesilla Valley Community of Hope campus in 1998. Since 1984, El Caldito has served more than two million meals and now serves more than 90,000 meals a year.
