LAS CRUCES PUBLIC SCHOOLS

Elementary art students continue creating imaginative art

Posted

This is part of the Bulletin’s continuing series on artwork created by Las Cruces Public Schools students.

“One of the best things about teaching art online is when students present their artwork through a media recording,” said Leticia “Lettie” Medina, who teaches art for Las Cruces Public Schools at Monte Vista and Loma Heights elementary schools. “Not only do I get to see them, but I get to hear them explain all about their art and what art elements they used to create their art.  I definitely miss seeing students in person, but I’m thankful they’re still able to create some art at home.

“As an art teacher, I try to introduce new artist and the history of art so that students not only create art but learn about its roots,” Medina said. “Although teaching online has its many challenges, everyone from administrators, teachers to parents have stepped up to make online teaching as positive and as successful as possible.”

“This year has presented everyone with new challenges,” said Hiba Mohammad, a visual arts teacher who works with Medina at Monte Vista Elementary School and also teaches at Cesar Chavez Elementary. “And while we are not able to work in person with our young artists, I’ve received some wonderful artworks demonstrating what students have learned from our art lessons online. I’ve enjoyed the creativity I’ve seen from our students. Many have been using alternative materials and recycled paper to create beautiful art. As an artist, I miss being around those young artists, but the artworks they turn in bring so much joy.”
