EMERALD ISLE BOUTIQUE

Emerald Isle Boutique celebrates 40th anniversary

Posted

“They know what I want to wear and they’re willing to go find it, and I love that,” a longtime customer of Emerald Isle Boutique said at the boutique’s 40th anniversary celebration Oct. 1 at Bite of Belgium. “It’s like having your own custom buyer,” she said.

The customer has been shopping at Emerald Isle since she moved to Las Cruces 15 years ago and was mostly recently assisted by owners Kelli and Louise Burchell as she prepared for her granddaughter’s garden wedding, she said.

At the celebration, Kellie and Louise led a champagne toast to Emerald Isle’s ruby anniversary, joined by Bite of Belgium Vice President Jodie York. More than 100 guests also raised their glasses, including Jeanette Smith, who is Louise’s sister. Louise Burchell and Jeanette Smith opened Emerald Isle Oct. 1, 1981. Smith retired in 2002, and Kelli joined Louise at the helm.

“I went to the original Emerald isle,” said another long-time customer at the celebration. “It’s a really fun store to browse in.”

“They give you very TLC care,” said another customer, remembering that Louise Burchell recently got down on her knees at the boutique to pin up a pair of pants the customer needed to have altered. “They’re there to help you,” the customer said. “It’s service like you used to get, and the clothes are so comfortable.”

That kind of customer service, along with offering unique fashions, has been the goal for Emerald Isle since the beginning, Louise and Kelli said in a news release. The name of their business, in fact, means “an oasis of rare gems in the desert,” they said.

Emerald Isle, located at 1701 Calle de Mercado (a Bulletin neighbor), today offers “ladies’ clothing and accessories that are hand-picked” by Louise and Kelli, who “keep their nearly 2,000-square-foot location stocked year-around with revolving merchandise made up of both globally renowned brands and specialty boutique lines,” the news release said.

The Oct. 1 celebration included a fashion show, with models visiting tables in the outdoor tent at Bite of Belgium.
